What are some top ways that you can do to keep your brain young?
Some of the top ways to keep your brain young include:
Exercise regularly
Whenever you read a guide on any aspect of your health, one of the most important things you should be doing is exercising regularly. Exercise is so important as it has huge benefits, from helping your mental health to reducing the chances of you getting ill. As a guide, you should be aiming to exercise around two to three times a week at a moderate intensity. This could be anything from kayaking or rock climbing to swimming or running. If you struggle for motivation to exercise, try and take a friend or family member with you, this way they can keep you accountable.
Eat a healthy diet
Another aspect that will appear in a lot of guides is your diet. Again, like exercise, your diet plays an essential role in your overall health. A good diet and you’ll feel alive, healthy, and motivated. A bad diet and you’ll feel sluggish, tired, and unmotivated. It’s crazy how much your mood will change due to the foods you are eating that week. As a guide, aim to eat around 5 pieces of fruit and vegetables a day. If you struggle to do this, the best thing to do is include vegetables in the sauces you make for dinner. For example, when you make a curry, add onion and peppers to it, or when making a lasagne, add peas and sweetcorn to the sauce.
Get plenty of sleep
The amount of sleep that you should be getting daily varies depending on your age, but as a general consensus, aim to get around 7-9 hours of sleep each day. Sleep helps your body to repair and relax. It improves your brain function, maintains a healthy weight, and improves your overall mood. If you are unsure of how much sleep you are getting each week, try and keep a sleep diary or use a fitness watch to track it. A fitness watch is particularly useful as it tracks your sleep through your activity levels and heart rate. This means you can wear it on your wrist and not have to actively think about how much sleep you are getting, unlike keeping a sleep diary.
Develop your brain strength
Developing your brain strength through mental stimulation will work wonders in keeping your brain young. Mental stimulation is so important, and what we mean by this is, regularly working out your brain. You can work your brain out through mental puzzles, drawing, painting, learning a new language, dancing, or learning to play a musical instrument, amongst other ways. You could read articles that can help you learn more about developing your brain strength and different ways you can help it.
Cut out negative influences
There are a few negative influences in life that you may have, which have a big impact on your health. When we say negative influence, we mean things like smoking and overdrinking. Smoking, in particular, is known to cause many health conditions, such as cancer and if you binge drink alcohol, this can cause liver failure, which is also very bad for your health and your brain. Take a moment to reflect on your daily habits and try to pick out any negative things that you do that you can reduce, like alcohol and drinking. Sometimes it’s about finding a good balance and enjoying but only in moderation.
And because you are not your feelings, you can decide at any moment to simply let them go. Choosing to let go of your emotions instead of identifying with them is a deceptively powerful technique.
Drink plenty of water
Never underestimate the power of water! Water and being hydrated is one of the most important things for keeping your brain young and healthy. The brain itself is made up of around 85% water and when you are not hydrated enough it can cause it to struggle. Water gives the brain energy for it to function as it should, including helping with your thoughts, and memory processes and producing hormones and neurotransmitters. The amount of water you need to drink depends on many factors, however, the general aim is for men to drink around 2.6 liters of fluid per day, and women should do around 2 liters. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, do a lot of activities such as sports or if you’ve been ill it’s important to drink more.
Keeping your brain young is not overrated and you should be making some changes in your life to help it if you feel like you have been neglecting your brain. You don’t have to go all out and change everything in your routine, but making a few changes at a time may help—especially getting enough sleep!
