It’s very easy for self-help and personal improvement to seem like something you force upon yourself. You might have an image of grabbing yourself by the collar and dragging yourself up onto your feet, knowing that while you feel rough, doing the right thing is non-negotiable. Of course, some people do tend to adapt more readily to tough love, but not everyone.

If you’ve found that the “force yourself” mode rarely works nor feels sustainable, don’t worry, you’re not weak. It might just be that the experience of self-development isn’t something you really absorb under harsh obligation. Much like those dealing with chronic illnesses, sometimes, dancing with the circumstances as and when you can, as opposed to forcing our behavior and response to be a certain way, is important.
In this post, we’ll learn how to dance with your self-development, as in, how to get the best of yourself without dismissing your needs as a real human being. Let’s consider the advice, below:
Plan Around When You Have Energy
If you find it hard to be motivated and work on your progression in line, listen to your body. If you find yourself consistently hitting a wall around mid-afternoon, maybe that’s the time to take a break or switch to something lighter.
Think about this concept – “natural energy rhythms,” because that helps you optimize your work when you’re feeling best. Then you can use that momentum to gently increase your focus and ability, just like working a muscle. You’re much more likely to stick with such an approach if you don’t overexert yourself that way. This approach feels less like forcing yourself into something unnatural and more like making the most of what you already have.
Figure Out Your Working Preferences
Are you a morning person who loves to start the day with a burst of productivity, or do you find that your brain mostly kicks into gear after the sun goes down? Knowing when you’re most alert and focused can help you structure your day in a way that feels natural and effective, and even arrange your general working efforts around that.
Perhaps you prefer studying for your university course in the morning, for instance. Perhaps you need help from a healing coach such as me and serenityatsummit.com to overcome a habit that’s been harming you before you can really feel productive. That doesn’t mean you need to be rigid about a specific way of working but understanding your needs can certainly be a more mature way to get the best from yourself.
Don’t Make Everything About Personal Progression
Put simply, you have to give yourself permission to enjoy activities purely for the sake of enjoyment, with no agenda attached to any of them. It could be your solemn duty to learn how to rest because, without that, you can’t be productive. Having one hobby you can return to without just sleeping can help you better express your energy and give you a break from constant productivity. We’d recommend reading, as it’s cheap, and doesn’t necessarily require an intense energy investment.
With this advice, we believe you’ll be much better able to dance with your self-development going forward.
Now you.
