I love Twixmas. My Norwegian boyfriend has a name for it: Romjul.
I’m talking about the twilight days between Christmas and the New Year. There’s something about this meditative space that really feels safe when I put on stretch pants, eat my own body weight in chocolates, and settle in, while my siblings are preparing for parties and fireworks.
I’ve found this space very often triggers some of my biggest and best ideas for the year to come. This is a brilliant time to clear the runway and let go of the things that used to hold me back so I can create the life I adore.
Know What I Need To Let Go?
Apparently, everything that is limited.
I used to hold on to so many things that cause me a great deal of pain and stress…
Relentless perfectionism.
Control freak tendency.
Demanding OCD mind.
An intense feeling of distress.
Overwhelming worry and anxiety.
The ex who dumped me because his mother told him to. Ha!
They’re boring!
They make me bored of myself.
I got stuck on my regrets, old wounds, and anger. I clung on, even addicted to them instead of letting them all go and allowing myself to be stress-free and happy.
You ask me why? I thought they made me strong when I could handle this.
My loving partner teased me that I was a stubborn sufferer for doing that.
The lesson I learned from a lifetime of holding on to this crap is that holding on does more damage than letting go.
And I wonder, does everyone else think “I need to hold on to this sense of identity because it has shaped me into the person I am today” BS as much as I did?
Letting Go Instead Of Holding On
OK, calm down. Before you get all up in arms, we’ve all done our share of holding on to things, people, and places. I know I’m guilty.
We replay past mistakes over and over again in our heads. We allow feelings to shape our actions in the present moment. We’re obsessed about the future as if that can give us power and a sense of control. We hold stress in our bodies and minds, potentially creating serious health issues.
Eventually, we can be so habituated with holding on because we think letting go is a difficult concept.
The phrase “let it go” used to really irritate me because I didn’t know what it meant or exactly how to do it.
The other side though, if we’re letting go, we’re opening ourselves up to new possibilities.
If you notice, we can’t hold on to our limiting emotions that prevent us from creating the lives that we adore and stay open to new possibilities at the same time. We have to choose.
We can choose to let go and live more freely, more fully, and more completely. Or we can choose to be a stubborn sufferer.
When you let go, you dissolve what’s holding you back, and the world opens up. When the world opens up, you feel powerful. And when you feel powerful, you act powerfully.

Hale Dwoskin, the New York Times best-selling author of “The Sedona Method“, writes:
“Let me explain by asking you to participate in a simple exercise.
Pick up a pen, a pencil, or some small object that you would be willing to drop without giving it a second thought.
Now, hold it in front of you and really grip it tightly. Pretend this is one of your limiting feelings and that your hand represents your gut or your consciousness. If you held the object long enough, this would start to feel uncomfortable yet familiar.
Now, open your hand and roll the object around in it.
Notice that you are the one holding on to it; it is not attached to your hand.
The same is true with your feelings, too. Your feelings are as attached to you as this object is attached to your hand.”
If you can drop an object, you can let go of negative emotions.
Yes, as simple as that. When you drop an object, you don’t need to understand the mechanics of your hand. You can choose to hold on to them or choose to let go of them.
The process of letting go comes down to welcoming the feeling and then asking 3 simple questions:
1. Could I let it go?
2. Would I let it go?
3. When?
